Chapter 9

Mabel

I park outside the gentleman’s club Max owns, though it’s just a high-class strip joint. Either way, it gives me the creeps. I rest my head on the steering wheel and take a deep breath. Today has been the worst since starting this whole thing. Wes lost five more properties to Max and he was furious because they would’ve made him a lot of money. I’ve also realized the feelings I have for Wes are no longer confusing; I love him. And because I do, the guilt, stress, and lies swirls inside me like an angry volcano. I can't keep doing this to him or his company. I need to find a way out.

With a plan in mind, I suck in a breath and walk inside. When I tell the hostess I’m meeting Max, she leads me to a private room where he’s waiting for me. There’s a glass in his hands and paperwork all over the table in front of him. She shuts the door behind her, trapping me in. My senses go on alert, and a heavy need to run away sweeping over me.

“Mabel, how nice to see you again. It’s been a successful few days, all thanks to you,” he says, his grin smug and evil.

“Max,” I say through clenched. I hate this man. He pulls out a USB and hands it to me. I take it with a questioning look. “What’s this?”

“Your next assignment,” he responds with pure glee.

“And that is?” I ask though I really don’t want to know, having a feeling it'll be awful.

“You plug this into Weston’s computer, and it’ll automatically copy his financial information, along with all his current property construction.” My stomach sinks at his words.

I don’t want to do this shit for him anymore, but I need time to figure out how to tell him no. His business, a place where he’s the boss, and can do god knows what to me, is not the time to finally stand up for myself. So, I lie to him.

“When do you need it?” I ask, my voice shaky.

“In two weeks. By then his quarterly finances will have been updated along with his newly inquired properties,” He says it like it’s no big deal.

I nod in agreement, unable to do anything else right now, and put it in my purse. “Is that all?”

He gives me a long look and I fidget under his gaze. “Yes.”

I turn, stopping with my hand on the doorknob as he says my name. When I glance at him, he pulls out a mug and I freeze, my blood pumping when I see my dad’s coffee mug from his hospital room. I painted it when I was a younger, proclaiming him World’s Greatest Father.

“Where did you get that?” I ask, though I already know the answer.

He ignores my question and instead says, “I just wanted to remind you what’s at stake.”

“I know,” I snap.

“Good, then you’ll make sure this is taken care of.” He pushes the mug off to the side and I walk up and snatch it.
